Raised to Hate: Kids of Westboro Baptist Church

This special 20/20 is one that will send chills up and down your spine. What we teach our children is important. We know as Christians that we teach our children to have compassion, and tell the truth, and serve God . The Bible teaches hate when it comes to sin and we are to deal with our own sin issues. However teaching children to be a puppet of the parents and teach them to hate with out a foundation is something that will I feel in the not to distant
Future will become against the law. IF we do not take stock now in how we raise our children. Love our brothers and hate their sin.
WE know that the only way to heaven is through the cross. However.. the hard sell of our faith that is talked about in this story is something that needs to be hared, But with a softer sell. Christ came in a way to change us and make us to conform to his ways of his kingdom. Not become something that boarders on something that came from the pit of hell itself.

just an extreme version of a prevalent attitude
My posts are never popular here, because I see things differently than many of you. However what I say is what I believe in sincerity and this topic is no different, so I'll comment on it.
I see the Westboro church people as an extremist version of thinking that goes on pretty commonly in Christian circles. Enormous numbers of Christians reject and despise gay people but don't carry it anywhere near to the extreme of some of these fringe churches. In fact, they often hide their distain and put on a good, loving face, but it doesn't take too much insight to see what's really there.
I'm not gay so I haven't experienced it personally, but I know people who are and who have experienced "stealth" forms of this attitude when it's made clear that they are unwelcome in Christian churches or with Christian friends. It doesn't take much to see behind a smiling face.
I find it intriguing that lots of Christians single out a very few sins to condemn over all others - being gay (even though medical data suggests there is a large biological component to it) and abortion being the prime examples. What about stealing, false witness, and adultery - sins that are committed by Christians at about the same rate as in the non-Christian population. Are they somehow more acceptable sins because lots of Christians commit them? where are the churches that have their little kids carrying signs saying to kill liars? The platitude of "we're not perfect, just forgiven" suggests that Christians consider themselves above the same rules they condemn others for. This just further damages Christian credibility with non-Christians.
High profile churches like Westboro are very destructive to the effort to "go therefore into all the world...." because of their extreme hatred of people living in a specific sin that they've taken on as a crusade. Of course, Pat Robertson told us Katrina hit New Orleans because of the gays there, and that 9-11 happened for similar reasons, so maybe it isn't all that rare.
Consider how this looks to someone on the outside who is "lost." Why would they want to join a hate-spewing organization, even if they aren't gay? The problem for American Christianity is that people naturally generalize - what Westboro is doing becomes the face of Christianity, whether that's true or not.
This puts up a barrier to outsiders even investigating to see if there might be something of value in Christianity. If the Great Commission is to be taken seriously, Christians can't start out by spewing hatred. I never read that Jesus said that God hates gays or that they should be killed. I think it must be hard to explain the Gospel to someone you're holding in contempt.
It's not clear how to shut down the lunatic fringe such as groups like Westboro. Perhaps a good step would be extensive and outspoken condemnation of their actions by real Christians, but that seems to be nearly absent. Viewed by a person outside of Christianity, that would seem to suggest that Christians agree with Westboro. Why don't Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Pentacostal, Evangelical and other leaders (leaders not just members) speak out and condemn this stuff? Why not join together and take out full page ads in major newspapers condemning this hate? Their silence suggests that they agree with what's happening. Where is the outrage from Christians?
I'm not Christian, and i'm 30 and female - part of the demographic that is very under-represented in churches today. I've been around Christians enough and done enough reading to know there's a rich tapestry of reasons to be drawn to Christ, but know many in my demographic that just dismiss Christianity outright as filled with bigots and wild-eyed hate-mongors. I was in discussion with a (married) 28 year old woman recently who asked me "why would I join a church that hates my friends?" By church, she meant the broader Christian community, not a specific church.
The Christian community has a real image problem that is driven by these hateful "Christians" and it is interfering with bringing the next generation of people into the church. It's a part of what keeps me away, and i know it's a part of what keeps many away.
As the old saying goes, "Lord, save me from your followers."Posted 06-10-2010 at 12:40 PM by confl

Hate "gays" naw. (now one small thing I hate is the mis-use of that word).
Hate the sin of ANY SEX outside of God's excellently perfect context. Yessirreebob!
Anyone with "homosexual tendencies" must deal with them just like those with any lust. God's Word is easy to understand when it comes to "any" sex outside of one woman, one man, united BEFORE GOD.
You get to chose, you reap the results.
Hate homosexuals, no sir. I hate their sin, it is something God deems disgusting just like "fornication" but a little worse (but sin is sin and the smallest is too large).
Please go back to the truth and read it.
Don't take your liberties to the street, take them to the Lord. Now, if you hate me for these words, it is sad. I'm not worth it. Take it up with my Father in heaven. He invented sex. He knows how it is to be "used" and His plan wasn't for it to divide. Get it? Be fruitful and multiply.Posted 06-18-2010 at 11:37 AM by Cowpatty

Who's fault is it if someone really hates God's children? Is it God they really hate? In America the Bible is quite readily Available. No one can Blame God's Children for there own Rebellion. I cant blame anyone for my choices, so God holds those who refuse to accept his Son as the Reconciliation unto him, who refuse to accept Jesus as the Lord over there life, who refuse to submit unto Jesus, denying themselves and picking up there cross and following him.
Do not let people fool you, maybe they talk about how Christians are this n that, but sorry you reject Christ you cannot blame his Disciples. Even if you think they havent been living up to what you think the standards of a Christian should be. All Know God is real All know they need a Saviour. No one has an excuse. And thats Scripture.
ON westboro, obviously they are not Saved. They do satans work not Christs.
On Gays, it is disgusting what they do, and the list keeps growing on the sexual variations that demand to be 'normalized' we have gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, curious, transsexual, transgender, transvestite, Omni-sexual, Metro-sexual, etc.... It doesnt seem to end, when you sanction gay and lesbian you get all the baggage. Anything goes. Get it? Has anyone even checked out a gay website? Do you even know anything about gays? Hello! Best be Praying everyday on this, because they want to give the world a make-over in there image or the image of the flesh. This is real. What is the flesh? Everything God despises. It is Lawlessness as prophesied.
Jesus is Lord of all. Amen.Posted 06-22-2010 at 06:38 PM by igh

I wanted to clear a few things up as to why I posted this article on my blog. The story is from the position of the liberal media.I wanted to show the sympathy that the homosexual community is receiving from the media. "Oh feel sorry for us. The evil bad Christians are picketing against us." However,I also wanted to show the evil in how the christian community is made to look bad because of those who function in the ex-stream of what they believe. It makes all of us look like we abuse our children and need to be in jail because we profess Jesus as the way , the truth and the life and that no man makes it to heaven except through the foot of the cross. I believe that those who choose alternative same sex life styles need Jesus . I believe they can be delivered and set free from the lie of gender confusion and I was born this way. I believe that God mad man in his image and everything eles is to destroy the validity of the written word of God. do I picket against those who chose this life style? "NO" But I will pray for them and ask God to deliver them and bring them into the kingdom of God. This is a media piece. It is up to us to know how Christians are being portrayed and behave accordingly to make sure we show Christ image to the world in all that we do. This behavior by this church isn't doing that according to the word of God.
