True Humility
Greetings, dear friends in the blessed Name of our Lord Jesus. Please forgive me for not posting letters for some time now. Many of us see people who seem to be quite pious and humble and admire their timidity. However, in this letter I will show you what true humility really is.
The text for my letter today is from Philippians 2:5-11, where the Apostle Paul is describing the nature of our Lord Jesus. The natural life is boastful, arrogant and proud (James 4:13-17, 2 Peter 2:11-12) and this is something that we can easily spot. But there is another, “false humility” which if not discerned properly can be mistaken for true humility. Philippians 2:6 declares that Christ Jesus, being in the form of God, didn’t behave like God, i.e., as a Sovereign entity not subject to anybody. Instead, Christ became our servant (Luke 22:21-30), and demonstrated how a Perfect human being ought to serve and worship God.
Notice that Christ never disowned Himself, i.e., He never lied about His true identity (John 8:58, Luke 23:3). In the modern world, when one confirms their true stature or identity it is considered arrogant, however, we are called to humble ourselves before God, not necessarily before men (unless, of course the men themselves are godly or empowered with divine authority (Romans 13:1-7), which precludes the Hitlers, etc). It sounds very pious and religious to pronounce ourselves nothing, while inwardly we may be conceited (Colossians 2:23) like the Pharisees.
There is something else that is very striking about the nature of the Lord Jesus. He became obedient to God even to the point of dying on a cross (Philippians 2:8). Even soldiers disobey their commanders, when the mission seems suicidal. Christ, however, demonstrates true obedience, not to men, but to God. Those that profess to be subservient to men (or women) in this world, may actually be disobedient to God. Once again the Pharisees, thoroughly deceived by Satan, reveal what false humility is (Mark 7:8-13).
True humility, i.e, setting apart Christ as God in your heart (1 Peter 3:15), causes God Himself to elevate that soul. Christ Jesus, may have appeared adamant to the Pharisees (Matthew 12:14), but He was entirely meek before God and exalted to the highest of heavens (Philippians 2:9). Further, the name of Jesus, which was reviled by the crowd (Matthew 27:25), is now above all names (Philippians 2:11).
How is the condition of your soul friend? Are you pretending to be pious for the praise of men, or is your heart truly right with God? If you are doubtful, then now is the time to come to Jesus to get it fixed.
