Re: "... crucifixion in the spiritual sense is that Christ died on the cross for the sins of humanity..."
Actually, He only paid for the sins of His people...the Elect children of God; keeping in mind that He is indeed God and was God in the flesh who dwelt among humanity, ergo, Emmanuel, God with us.
Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
It is only God who who could pay for the sins of His people and the payment had to be immeasurably great to justify eternal salvation for the Elect. While on the Cross the Lord was forsaken by God the Father...think about that for a moment.
Matthew 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
While on the Cross (which was certainly made from a tree) the Lord was accursed...God was forsaking God. So then, imo, the horrific crucifixion which the Lord experienced was nothing compared to being forsaken by His Father...now that had to really hurt! As I see it, it hurt so much that it was infinitely more equivalent to eternal damnation for all of humanity.
Deuteronomy 21:22 And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: 23 His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
Thank you for the question, igliojack. I'm not sure that I've done it justice. What happened spiritually on the Cross if pretty heavy stuff.
